Optimising Leiden's traffic

Traffic in Leiden

The City of Leiden is a very old city with many monumental buildings and narrow streets. This means it is poorly accessible by car and many of the access routes are often congested.

Landscape is working together with Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science from Leiden University to help the City of Leiden tackle this problem.

Luckily, the intersections in Leiden are fitted with advanced traffic monitoring systems that count every vehicle that passes the intersection and traffic control systems.

To see what the precursors for congestion are, we are applying machine learning algorithms to the data available from the traffic monitoring system, as well as to other datasets, such as weather data and public event calendars. Then, using the existing traffic light controls, we will respond to these precursors to reroute traffic and improve the overall traffic flow.
